4th of July Front Porch: 2015

Posting an update of what the house is looking like this summer. We had family visit for the 4th so I actually did some porch decorating for the holiday.

A couple of big changes to the front. We have started painting the trim and doors. The garage doors were teal/french blue. As is the window trim. We plan to change all this to just the crisp white. I think I will keep the nautical navy on the door. The other change is the new garden fence and gate you can see to the left of this photo. It still needs stain and the tops finished, but it looks great and keeps the deer from eating our garden.

For the first time I actually have a large "old fashoned" coverd porch. I decided that some classic buntings would be the perfect touch for an island style 4th.

Simple red flowers next to the blue of the door, and moving a metal star to the door looks patriotic without spending much money. Everything here I already had.. just added the fresh flowers.

My pots are not looking super lush this year.. probably because it's abnormally hot and dry this summer. I'm going to have to break down and buy drippers and install them all over the yard.

Of course by the end of the week the porch was covered with sand, wet swim suits, towels and coolers... but that is summer life.

Adding cheap holiday cheer to my patio pots.

My house projects have had to take an unexpected break. I took a bad fall in November and actually broke my bum... or rather broke a blood vessel in my bum. It's quite painful, I would not recommend it. Pretty much only comfortable position was laying on my side for a few weeks, and still I'm not able to wear pants due to the swelling..and then I got a cold.. ha. Anyhow. I had a few good days to work on things, and this week I decided to fluff up my wilting patio pots. We actually had freezing weather and snow a couple weeks ago and it finished off my annuals. I had already put up my Christmas decor, these sad plants are certainly not a cheery addition to them.

I thought about just stashing them back in woods until time to plant them again. Then I decided that maybe they just needed a bit of holiday trimming. Luckily now that I have a house in the woods we have no shortage of green trimmings. With our winter wind storms here the ground oven is covered in them.

A bit of wandering back into our woods and I noticed that we had a little tree go over in the previous storm.

I took a few of these branches too.

I got a good pile of fir collected and set off for some holly.

We have a large variegated holly in our yard, one badly in need of grooming.. unfortunately it didn't have many berries.. but still add texture and I didn't feel bad removing branches from it's shaggy self.

I simply snipped bits of branch and I pushed them into the pots, and added some of the LED lights from my potted arborvitaes.

Much better, it looks so much happier...even the rain gave it a bit of sparkle.

Even a plant that has lost it's leaves looks better with a ring of greenery, and the makeover cost me nothing.

Fall Prepping the Rabbit Hutch and a Hutch Tour

Monday I knew wet weather was on the way and that I needed to take the dry day to do some clean up and work on our rabbit hutch. Po is the family bunny, a Holland Lop. He is still a kid, only 3 months old or so.

Meet Po-

I thought while I'm at it I would give you a bit of a tour of Po's hutch. We set up his hutch in a animal pen that was already here.

I'm not sure what the owners used it for, the neighbors said they didn't have a dog. Maybe it was just for the garbage cans. ( I spotted a can dumped over with two raccoon in it last night on my way home) But it works well as a run for him and to keep curious night time critters from harassing him. (we have coyotes and cougars too!) It has a lean-to roof and is nestled up against the brick of the fireplace.

I had noticed that even though his hutch is under cover, rain would hit the bricks and bounce back up into the bottom level of the hutch. He could still stay dry upstairs, but who want's to only have half a dry home? And besides the bottom corners is where he chose to keep his litter box. So it would be soaking wet and he would still sit there...if you have ever had rabbits you will know that wet dirty litter is not healthy for buns.

I pulled a bit of plastic I had in my fabric stash. It's the kind you can use to cover tables and it is sold by the yard at Jo-Ann fabric. (a shower liner would work too) I draped it partially across the front and around the side that is open on the bottom.

I folded it at the corner and used the feed bucket to hold it down. Bricks on the corners keep it from flapping in the wind.

I didn't want the plastic to go across the whole front. This gives Po a place to sit in the fresh air. And keeps the hutch from having condensation inside. I tucked his food dispenser in behind the plastic to make sure rain dos net wet his food. I don't fill the dispenser all the way. Food can go bad left in it, so I just give him fresh food regularly. If we do head out for an over night I will add more to make sure he doesn't run out while we are gone.

The plastic just flips up out of the way when we are cleaning the cage or he is out for exercise.

Po enjoys lounging upstairs in the "loft". We use fleece for bedding. Underneath is layers of newspaper. The newspaper wicks the moisture down through the fleece and away from Po's feet, rather like how the new cloth diapers work.

The upstairs nest box has a box of rabbit safe shaving and paper mix with hay. This is where he likes to sleep and snuggle and he keeps this area pretty clean on his own. I rarely find any poop or pee in here. So far he has been really good about not chewing on fleece, but he does like to move the blanket around and "make his bed" by digging in it.

Down the ramp is his litter box with more rabbit safe shaving/paper mix.  I buy this premixed at Pet Co. This isn't where I would have picked to put the litter box.. but this is where he decided to have his "potty corner" He does most of his pee in it. It really saves having to change the fleece and paper. I just use a little broom and pan to sweep up his little "bunny raisens" and change the litter, and we can go for a week without changing the fleece/paper.
He has some toys down here and likes these wicker balls to chew and throw around.

The downstairs nest box has a box I cut holes into and the hay feeder. He loves to play with boxes and sit on boxes and hide in boxes. In this case he can play and munch hay in here and stay cozy on windy, cool, days.

So the rain storm came in and now the hutch looks like this.

You can see how the bottom half of the plastic is all wet.

But the bottom floor now stays cozy and dry.

Unfortunately the run was quite wet, so Po came inside for a run around the house.

The rain is also putting a damper on or other projects. My hubby has been putting up new garden fences. This winter the dogs will use this space for a run, and then next spring/summer the yard will get fenced and then with some chicken wire to secure the lower fence, Po will be able to free-range during the day in the garden.

Summer Front Porch

Summer is officially over, I thought maybe I should post our summer front porch look before I start swapping it out for fall stuff. I love having a large front porch.. and at some point it will be dreamy, but for now I'm just lucky if it's not covered with kids sandals and empty cardboard boxes from moving. (yes we still have unpacking to do) I actually took these with my phone... trying to capture what work I had accomplished before it got messed up again.

We have a lovely porch, with white railings, cedar ceiling and recessed lights, there is even a blue porch swing toward the end.

I added this thrift store rocking chair, I painted it with Rust-oleum Panters Touch in Berry Pink. The color matches the geraniums in my pot very well.

I added some accents in this corner.. it really needs something with more umph. It's too shady to put a potted plant. I like to put pots where mother nature will water them. (I'm lazy) Another summer project was these white metal stars. They were rustic red, but the color blended into the shingle color too much, so I hit them with some Petal White.. I think they will also be a great Christmas accent this winter.
My pots... they got a late start this year. I had nice flowers I had planted for selling and showing our previous home... but the trailer ride over to their new home did them in. I had to replant it, and so they have not matured too much. I have gotten some pretty geranium blossoms, the petunia and sweet potato vine have not trailed much. Bummer as I love having that dark potato vine for Halloween decorating. Notice my little dragon? He likes to guard the front porch. :)

Our Yard

Well start with a bit on our yard and garden. Our property is almost an acre and a half. Quite a bit of it is still in woods, we have a natural buffer in front, sides and behind. We have a small clearing in the back yard, overhung with mature maples and a deer fenced side garden. We haven't done much with the yard, this spring the garden is getting a face lift.

Right now most boxes are empty, except for some flowering perennials that will be moved to make way for veggies. The deer netting is ripped in places and we plan to put a wire fence in it's place. Towards the side you can see the abandoned chicken coop. It needs a new roof, and right now is just housing our lawn mower and garden tools. The arbor in the right of the photo has a monster climbing rose with the sweetest smelling pink roses. I'm pretty sure it's Zephirine Drouhin.

Our back yard has a big lovely two level deck, one level is older wood.. the lower deck was built by the previous owners right before the sold the house. My hubby sealed and stained it, but the stairs need better railings.

Our front yard has rather large garden bed with some pretty mature plants including lavander and rosemary. I just love lavender and I think this spring I will add some more to this bed, along with some taller plants towards the hedge.

The back yard has this rustic playground, built out of cedar it blends into the yard fairly well and is quite fun to play on... I mean the kids enjoy it.. you know because I of course don't go out and swing or anything like that...
